SES Counts Success One Employee at a Time
Scientific and Engineering Solutions (SES) is an e-business
solutions provider. The company's main areas of focus are
network engineering, systems engineering, and software systems
support, with principal expertise in information assurance and
visualization technologies. The company is located in Annapolis
Junction, MD.
While SES serves both private and public sector enterprises, the
company's primary customer base is in the federal government
defense/intelligence community. SES has successfully competed
against giants such as Lockheed Martin and Booz Allen Hamilton
to secure more than $45 million in worldwide business over the
past five years.
Reginald Daniel, a former communications analyst with the U. S.
Air Force and a top-earning salesman with Silicon Graphics,
founded SES in his basement in 1996 with three employees. Just
five years later, SES has a staff of more than 100. Daniel
attributes the company's success to SES' innovative and creative
approach to attracting and retaining good employees. Among other
innovations, SES has established a development lab - an
"incubator" to develop and manage the creation of new products
designed by employees.
Each and every SES employee develops an Individual Development
Plan that takes into consideration his or her values and long-
term personal goals. What began as an informal meeting between
the CEO and each worker has evolved into a flourishing program
with mentors who engage employees and attempt to tie their
personal and professional objectives to those of the company.
The result is not a typical performance plan or goal statement -
it's a life plan. Each time an employee reaches a milestone in
his or her life plan it's a victory that enhances SES's bottom
line. SES enjoys a 95 percent retention rate among its employees.
As part of the Eagle-Alliance team led by Computer Sciences
Corporation and Northup Grumman, SES is looking forward to taking
advantage of the team's most recent win - a portion of the $2
billion 10-year Groundbreaker IT outsourcing contract. The
company is also planning to expand its facilities and open an
IT training site. Daniel's goal is to reach $100 million in sales
by 2005.
SES' commitment to its employees also extends to the next
generation of workers. Under Daniel's leadership, the company is
helping bridge the digital divide with the founding of an IT
mentoring program for at risk youth.
In recognition of his achievements in business and community
service, Daniel was honored by the National Black Chamber of
Commerce as its 2001 Entrepreneur of the Year. Daniel has also
been named Ernst & Young's IT Consulting Services Entrepreneur of
the Year for Maryland and is under consideration for the national
E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year award in San Diego later this year.
