Pelusus, Wireless Solutions for the Telecom Industry
We all have our own horror stories from our years of experience
with a "phone company". While they sell a lot more than phone
service, "service providers" or "telecoms" are the companies that
sell the network plumbing that we use in our homes and businesses.
For the most part, our collective experiences with these companies
have been less than warm and fuzzy. There is never a shortage of
articles in the technical and business press about how telecoms
have somehow wronged a person or business through delays, service
outages, or missed commitments
In all fairness to service providers, the job of getting us voice
and data service is not an easy matter. It is a complicated set
of complex steps and interdependencies that could easily boggle
the mind. In fact, over the years the number of new competitors,
the number of new service offerings, and the amount of new network
infrastructure installed has been incredible. That's why when we
order new voice or data service, it is not as easy as just
pressing a few buttons far from it.
A new company in the region is trying to make our experience with
telecoms better. Pelusys, located in Columbia, Maryland is a
software start-up focused on the problems of telecoms by offering
wireless solutions for the thousands of field telecom workers.
These people are responsible for repairing and maintaining our
voice or data service. Historically speaking, these workers have
been detached from the information in a telecom's back office
application's, but they are the very people who need access to
this information from the field. Due to the complexity of the
system, getting them the right information at the right location
at the right time has been nearly impossible. Historically, the
telecoms have resorted to pagers, cell phones, fax machines and
stacks of paper to communicate all of the interrelated information.
The Pelusys software resolves the communication problems that
mobile telecom workers fight day-to-day and hopefully makes our
life as consumers of these services a bit more bearable. The
software extracts information that mobile workers need, combines
it in a meaningful manner, and then sends it to field workers via
wireless technology and PDAs. This allows these workers to
complete their tasks in a fraction of the time, which translates
into significant savings, faster customer response time and
hopefully a satisfied customer. Using Pelusys, telecom workers
may never have to reschedule a service call because they didn't
have the information or paperwork needed to complete the call.
Who knows, thanks to Pelusys, one day we may even grow to like our
voice and data service provider!
