Maryland Institute College of Art
Maryland Institute College of Art, which celebrated its 175th
anniversary in 2001, has consistently been named among the top
four visual arts colleges in the nation. Committed to providing
an environment that fully realizes the technical, aesthetic, and
philosophical promise of the new imaging and information
technologies, MICA has a number of programs that prepare students
to assume leadership roles in realizing the implications and power
of electronic media for the 21st century. Included in MICA's
offerings are graduate programs in Digital Arts and Photography
and Digital Imaging and undergraduate programs in Interactive
Media, Digital Animation, and Video.
In response to a need for research into the ways in which
technology based imaging and communication can advance the needs
of culture, science, and business, MICA has recently formed the
Center for New Media. The Center seeks to partner with arts
organizations, educational institutions, and local technology
industries to undertake collaborative initiatives. It also
provides a forum for the Community to explore the impact of
information and expressive technologies on contemporary culture.
In 2001-2002, the Center is hosting the New Media Forum, a series
of four panels that look at culture and technology from a variety
of critical perspectives. The next panel will be held on February
21st at 7:00 p.m. in MICA's Station Auditorium (Cathedral & Mount
Royal Ave.). Moderated by Will Larson, Director of Graduate
Photography and Digital Imaging, the panel will discuss issues
related to "Situated Realities: Works from the Silicon Elsewhere,"
an exhibition that will run in MICA's Decker Gallery from
February 1 through March 17, 2002. The panel and exhibition are
free and open to all interested public.
In 2003, MICA will open the Brown Center Art & Design Technology
Building, home for new and existing digital and electronic arts
programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Brown
Center will be an architectural landmark for Baltimore, a
physical symbol of the city's growing national prominence in
technology and design, and the first critical facility in the
implementation of the College's exciting vision for the future.
