Caliber Learning Network Trains and the World eLearns
Headquartered in Baltimore's Digital Harbor, Caliber Learning
Network is a leading provider of eLearning services. Caliber was
conceived while CEO and President, Chris Nguyen, was working at
Baltimore-based Sylvan Learning Systems. Sylvan was utilizing a
distance learning service to help train Company franchisees.
Nguyen and Sylvan President Doug Becker, were impressed with the
unique concept of eLearning and felt they could deliver a better
and more scalable model.
With the financial support of Sylvan Learning Systems and MCI
Worldcom, in 1996 Caliber began to take shape, designing the
technology platform behind its services and establishing a network
of classrooms. The up and coming Company went public in 1998 and
eventually grew out of it's Hamden home relocating its two hundred
employees to the Bagby building in Fells point, less than a block
from Sylvan headquarters. As unique as eLearning itself, Caliber
employees reflect a convergence of backgrounds in varying
industries from television and teaching to information technology
and professional services.
Caliber currently supports over 100 clients including AT&T,
Novell, and NEC America. and has formed alliances with best-of-
breed partners such as Enron, Netigy and Microsoft. To better
understand Caliber, imagine capturing the best elements of
traditional classroom learning with an internet based delivery
method which allows geographically dispersed companies to quickly
and cost effectively communicate with employees, customers and
business partners.
For instance, 3Com was constantly flying sales teams to remote
locations for new product training at great company expense.
Using all of Caliber's online delivery methods: InClass, Express
Live and OnDemand, 3Com was able to conduct a live online new
product training. Participants could attend at one of Caliber's
40 centers around the country, stay at their desktop viewing the
event live through the internet or view the event later on their
own time. Using the Caliber technology, participants could ask
questions online and share experiences with their peers. 3Com
liked this blended solution and felt that participants had a
better experience than traditional training.
Another Caliber client, Salomon Smith Barney uses Caliber's
Enterprise Learning Platform to bring employees together in a
highly collaborative environment. The Company sees increased
participant satisfaction, saves almost three-quarters of a million
dollars with each Caliber training event and has achieved a return
on investment of 173%.
Companies are rapidly incorporating eLearning as a cost effective
and scalable alternative to traditional methods of corporate
training and education. In fact the worldwide corporate eLearning
market will exceed $23 billion by 2004 according to industry
analysts. With recently enhanced technology and an established
blended model for eLearning delivery, Caliber is well positioned
and patiently awaiting this eminent growth.
