BulkRegister.com Manages Domain Name Registration and Branding

The introduction of new top level domain (TLD) names such as .biz and .info, along with .com, .net and .org, have been the catalyst for the emergence of the domain name registration market. The problem — all these new TLDs cause confusion, frustration and complexity for companies trying to preserve brand identity and integrity on the Web. Ensuring that a company controls each of the possible combinations of its brand with the flood of TLDs, can be a full-time job.

Baltimore-based BulkRegister.com determined that the best solution was to provide a service that will easily and cost-effectively manage a company's Web presence and maintain its brand integrity. The opportunity for the business came about when ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) decided that Network Solutions (now part of Verisign) had to give up its monopoly on top level domain name registration. Network Solutions had been awarded TLD registration by the Federal government before there was any significant demand. ICANN's action created opportunities for companies other than Network Solutions to be TLD registrars.

BulkRegister.com is the only TDL registrar that provides value- added support services as a complement to high-volume domain name registration. These membership fee-based services are primarily delivered to a reseller community of 15,000 systems integrators, Web developers, designers and hosting firms offering their customers domain registration services. BulkRegister.com also provides services directly to brand-sensitive organizations with multiple domain requirements.

A long-time Baltimore resident, Tom Cunningham is the founder, Chairman and CEO of BulkRegister.com. Prior to starting BulkRegister.com, he developed instructional software and freelanced as a software designer. In just two years, BulkRegister.com, which has about 20 employees, has become the fourth largest registrar and gained seven percent market share.

BulkRegister.com competes side-by-side with other global providers of domain registration services, including Network Solutions and Register.com. Bulkregister projects its 2001 revenues are expected to reach $30 million. Funded by angel investors, the company is debt free and profitable. Bulkregister has nearly 20,000 customers including such well known names as Amazon.com, Office Depot and Revlon.
