Barcoding.com Grows Rapidly Offering Barcode Vertical Solutions
Barcoding.com offers pre-packaged barcoding solutions for business
to help track fixed assets, inventory, mail-room packages, and
documents. In addition, the company also provides wireless barcode
solutions for the retail, distribution, and warehousing industries.
Using this technology customers scan items and have the collected
information wirelessly transmitted to a host computer system.
Real-time data collection saves money by having critical data in
the hands of managers and customer service support staff when they
need it and reduces errors.
Jay Steinmetz, the owner and president of Barcoding.com, began his
career by developing missile-tracking systems for the Department
of Defense. After spending seven years with a few different
barcoding companies, Jay concluded that those companies were not
taking advantage of the growing need for vertical market
applications and the enormous potential of the Internet. Jay
started Barcoding.com in a one-bedroom apartment in 1997. Within
a few months, the company moved to a small office in Fells Point,
where the staff grew to 7 people. In early 2000, the company
moved to downtown Baltimore and grew to 15 people.
Earlier this year the company was forced to move from its downtown
offices. After an exhaustive and unsuccessful search for
affordable space in the City, the company turned to Mayor O'Malley
and his staff for assistance. The mayor's office proved a valuable
resource by providing a of list available space, discussing
different financial options, and ultimately facilitating the
negotiations for its new space on Boston Street in Canton.
Barcoding.com started in Baltimore and has stayed in Baltimore for
three main reasons: 1) a great source of inexpensive young, talent;
2) a Digital Harbor culture that has provided the opportunity to
grow; and 3) a central location in the mid-Atlantic region from
which to do business. In addition to its Baltimore headquarters
there are sales offices in Albuquerque, NM, Richmond, VA, Norwalk,
CT, and Sassenheim, Netherlands.
R.E. Michel, a distributor of of heating, ventilating, air conditioning,
equipment, parts and supplies represents a typical barcoding.com
customer. R.E. Michel couldn't get accurate shipping and inventory
information in a timely manner to assist with customer service.
Barcoding.com installed a wireless barcoding system. Employees
used hand-held devices to scan inventory. The scanned information
was wirelessly sent to the warehouse management system in real-
time. Now managers can connect to their host system via the
Internet and lookup the information they need. The system resulted
in better customer service and significant cost savings due to a more
efficient method to collect information.
Revenue reached $3.3 million in 2000 and is on pace to reach $10
million in 2001. Barcoding.com has provided automated data
capture solutions for R.E. Michel, Benelli, PSINet, Abbott
Laboratories, William B Meyer, Miller Brewing Company, and over
100 other customers.
