Column
Guidelines

Please continue to
follow the guidelines set forth by Ginny Stibolt:
One of the attractions
of Digital Harbor's website is the high tech content provided by
the community. I'm working with Mickey Wohlmuth on coordinating
the columns - I'm filling the editor's role here.
We are looking for a wide range of high tech subjects to be covered
through this vehicle. What we'd like to do is have four or five
columns from you per year on various high tech or business subjects.
We would like to cover a wide range of topics. Once a week there
is a new column that is announced in the newsletter and posted on
the website. The recent columns are posted prominently on the "Columns"
page and there is an archive section for older columns.
Here are the guidelines:
§ Each article should be 700 to 1200 words with a 100-word
summary of the article to insert in the newsletter. The topic should
stand alone at this length, but if there is a series of related
columns that is OK and they could be linked to each other for easy
reference.
§ Topics must be of general interest to the high tech community.
You can assume some computer and science knowledge, but the reading
should not be too esoteric - maybe 12th grade level. References
may be used for further information on the subject but not for understanding
your column. The goal is to have someone reading this say, "Wow,
that is cool!" or "I didn't know that!" or even,
"I can really put this information to good use in my
".
§ While I would assume that you are volunteering for this duty
in the name of good PR, etc., the columns must not be a direct sales
pitch for you or your company. We are looking for good information
for the readers and to increase the value of the website, not to
have this be your company's sales vehicle.
§ This is also not the place for negative diatribes - you know
the ones that claim that Bill Gates is really the devil in disguise
and look at what terrible thing he's done now. Keep the tone positive;
if Bill really has done something we should know about provide us
with your solution, remedy or alternative.
§ Your name, a 25-word description of your expertise and a
link will be provided at the end of each the column. The copyright
for the column remains with the author.
§ While I'm taking the role of editor, I must warn you that
the columns should be in pretty good shape before I get them. Please,
please have someone else read them carefully for errors and clarity
before you send them to me... I am not your English professor.
Please contact me with any questions and your proposals. I look
forward to meeting you all - at least through email and I expect
to learn many cool things doing this. And Mickey and I thank you
in advance for your participation.
